Most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night, but many of us do not get them. We blame work, social plans, or the latest series on Netflix. But the consequences of sleep loss are bigger than people think. When you do not sleep enough, your brain becomes slower. You make more mistakes, you forget names, and your mood becomes worse. After a single bad night, you are less productive and more impatient. Long-term sleep loss is even more serious. Scientists have linked chronic insomnia to heart disease, diabetes and weaker immune systems. People who sleep five hours per night for many years tend to live shorter lives than those who sleep eight. The good news is that sleep is free, and small changes can make a big difference. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Keep your bedroom cool and dark. Avoid screens for at least thirty minutes before sleep. If you struggle with sleep, do not feel bad about it. Talk to a doctor. There is no medal for being permanently tired.
