Coffee and the brain

Cómo afecta el café al cerebro: qué hace la cafeína, cuántas tazas son sanas y por qué cada persona es diferente.

Lectura

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world. Around two billion cups are consumed every day. For many people, the morning does not really begin until they have had their first sip. But what actually happens in the brain when you drink coffee? The key ingredient is caffeine. When you are awake for a long time, your brain produces a chemical called adenosine, which makes you feel tired. Caffeine blocks adenosine, so the tired feeling disappears for a few hours. Recent studies suggest that moderate coffee consumption, around two or three cups a day, may have several benefits: better concentration, faster reaction time, and even a lower risk of certain diseases. However, more is not always better. Drinking too much coffee can cause anxiety, sleep problems and headaches. It depends a lot on the person: some people can drink five cups and sleep perfectly, while others get nervous after just one. The best advice is simple. Listen to your body, avoid coffee in the late afternoon, and drink water too. Coffee can be a friend, but only if you treat it with respect.
