The unexpected rise of padel

El crecimiento global del pádel: por qué es fácil aprender, por qué es social, y por qué los precios están subiendo.

Lectura

Until ten years ago, padel was almost unknown outside Spain and Argentina. Today, it is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. New courts have opened in Sweden, the United Kingdom, Italy and even Dubai. Famous football players have invested millions in building padel facilities. Why this sudden popularity? There are several reasons. First, padel is easy to learn. The court is small, the rules are simple, and beginners can have a fun match after just one lesson. Tennis takes much longer to enjoy. Second, padel is social. You always play in pairs, so you need a partner. After the match, players often share a drink together. Third, padel is good business. A single court can host four players, who each pay a fee for one hour. Clubs can run from early morning to late at night. Of course, the boom has a downside. In some cities, demand is much higher than supply, and it can be difficult to book a court. Prices have also risen quickly. Still, most experts agree: padel is not a temporary trend. It is here to stay.
