Past perfect: had + participio

"Use had + past participle for an action that happened before another past action."

La regla

had + participio para una acción pasada ANTES de otra acción pasada.

El past perfect marca el orden entre dos eventos pasados: el que ocurrio primero va en past perfect, el segundo en past simple. "When I arrived, the meeting had already started" significa que la reunion empezo ANTES de que yo llegara. Es común con marcadores como by the time, before, after, already, just, never. La forma es invariable: had + participio para todas las personas. En español equivale al pluscuamperfecto: "habia empezado". Los hispanohablantes a veces usan past simple en los dos verbos y se pierde el orden.

Ejemplos

By the time I joined Nexora, the team had already shipped v1.

Cuando entre a Nexora, el equipo ya habia lanzado la v1.

When I opened Slack, Elena had sent three messages.

Cuando abri Slack, Elena habia enviado tres mensajes.

The deploy failed because we had skipped the tests.

El deploy fallo porque habiamos saltado los tests.

She had never used Git before her first job.

Ella nunca habia usado Git antes de su primer trabajo.

After we had merged the PR, the bug appeared.

I had just finished the review when the meeting started.

Acababa de terminar la revision cuando empezo la reunion.

They had fixed the issue before the post-mortem.

Habian arreglado el problema antes del post-mortem.

Casos típicos

Para marcar la acción más antigua de dos pasadashad + past participle (older) + past simple (newer)
When she arrived, we had finished.He had left before I called.
Con marcadores: by the time, before, afterBy the time + past simple, subject + had + p.p.
By the time he replied, I had closed the ticket.
Con already, just, never, yet (en pasado)had + already/just/never + p.p.
The standup had already ended.I had never seen that error.

Trampas hispanohablantes

When I arrived, the meeting already started.When I arrived, the meeting had already started.

Necesitas past perfect para marcar que empezo ANTES de que llegaras.

I had went to the office.I had gone to the office.

Despues de "had" usa el participio (gone), no el past simple (went).

By the time he called, I have finished.By the time he called, I had finished.

Sí la acción principal está en pasado, la anterior va en past perfect, no present perfect.

She had arrive before me.She had arrived before me.

Falta el participio: arrived, no arrive.
