Pasado perfecto continuó: had been + verb-ing

"An action in progress before another past event, emphasising duration."

La regla

Acción en progreso ANTES de otro evento pasado, enfatizando duracion.

Se forma con had been + verbo en -ing. Indica que algo estaba sucediendo durante un tiempo antes de que ocurriera otro evento pasado. Marcadores: 'for + duracion', 'since + punto inicio', 'when/before' como puente al evento. Diferencia con past perfect simple: ese enfatiza el resultado completado; este la duracion del proceso.

Ejemplos

When she arrived, I had been waiting for 2 hours.

Cuando llego, yo llevaba 2 horas esperando.

He was tired because he had been debugging since 7am.

Estaba cansado porque llevaba debugueando desde las 7am.

Before we shipped, the team had been testing for a week.

Antes de desplegar, el equipo llevaba una semana probando.

I had been studying English for 5 years before I moved to Murcia.

Llevaba 5 años estudiando inglés antes de mudarme a Murcia.

Her eyes were red she had been crying for hours.

Tenia los ojos rojos — habia estado llorando durante horas.

When the meeting started, I realised I had been writing the wrong report all morning.

Cuando empezo la reunion, me di cuenta de que llevaba toda la manana escribiendo el informe equivocado.

Trampas hispanohablantes

I had been knowing him for years.I had known him for years.

Verbos de estado no usan continuous.

When she arrived, I have been waiting for 2 hours.When she arrived, I had been waiting for 2 hours.

Sí el evento principal es pasado, usa had been (past perfect), no have been (present perfect).

He had been work hard.He had been working hard.

Tras 'been' siempre el verbo en -ing.

I had waited for 2 hours.I had been waiting for 2 hours.

Para enfatizar la duracion del proceso, usa continuous; simple solo dice que terminó.
